Electric systems use resistance heating cables that are installed beneath the surface material, such as concrete, asphalt, or pavers. Hydronic systems, on the other hand, circulate a heated fluid, usually a glycol mixture, through a network of tubing embedded in the surface. The activation of these systems can be manual, through a switch, or automated using sensors that detect precipitation and temperature. Snow sensors detect snowfall, while temperature sensors monitor surface conditions. When both conditions are met, the system automatically turns on to prevent ice formation and melt accumulated snow.
