Luktdysfunktioner, also known as olfactory dysfunction, refers to a reduced or lost ability to smell. This condition can manifest in various ways, including hyposmia (reduced ability to smell), anosmia (complete loss of smell), and parosmia (distorted sense of smell). The perception of smell is a complex process involving olfactory receptors in the nose, the olfactory nerve, and various parts of the brain. Any disruption along this pathway can lead to a dysfunction.

Common causes of luktdysfunktioner include viral infections, particularly the common cold and influenza, as well as more recent associations with viral respiratory illnesses like COVID-19. Head trauma can also damage the olfactory nerves or the brain regions responsible for processing smell. Nasal and sinus diseases, such as chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps, can obstruct airflow to the olfactory receptors. Neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease are also frequently associated with olfactory impairment, sometimes as an early symptom. Exposure to certain toxins or medications can also contribute.

The impact of luktdysfunktioner extends beyond the inability to enjoy pleasant aromas. It can significantly affect quality of life by diminishing the enjoyment of food and drink, as taste and smell are closely linked. It can also pose safety risks, such as the inability to detect smoke from a fire or spoiled food. Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and sometimes specific olfactory testing. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may involve addressing nasal congestion, managing underlying diseases, or in some cases, olfactory training. For many causes, particularly post-viral, olfactory dysfunction can improve over time, although recovery is not always complete.
