Luistonhallinta, often referred to by its acronym ESC (Electronic Stability Control) or ESP (Electronic Stability Program), is a crucial safety system found in modern vehicles. Its primary function is to prevent loss of traction and maintain directional control, particularly during sudden maneuvers or in slippery conditions.

The system works by constantly monitoring the vehicle's steering angle, wheel speeds, and lateral acceleration. Sensors detect if the vehicle is beginning to oversteer (skidding outwards) or understeer (plowing forward). If such a situation is identified, the luistonhallinta system intervenes automatically.

Intervention typically involves applying individual brakes to one or more wheels. For instance, in an oversteering scenario, the system might brake the front wheel on the outside of the turn to help pull the rear of the car back in line.
