The population is about 4,800, and the town functions as the administrative seat of Lradt Municipality.

Historically, Lradt was founded circa 1120 by settlers from the plains of Miro and grew as a market town on a traditional river-to-hinterland trade route. It received town rights in the 13th century, endured various conflicts in the early modern period, and underwent significant modernization in the 19th century with the arrival of the railway, which linked it more closely to regional markets.
