Lovere

Lovere is a comune in the Province of Bergamo, Lombardy, northern Italy. It sits on the western shore of Lake Iseo and forms part of the lake’s western basin. The town is known for its historic center, which climbs a hillside above the water and features narrow streets, stone buildings, and views over the lake.

Historically, Lovere developed as a market and port town connected to Lake Iseo’s trade routes. In the early modern era it came under the influence of the Republic of Venice, and later became part of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, and then the Kingdom of Italy. Its architecture reflects Medieval and Renaissance influences, with churches and palazzi that line the waterfront and hilltop lanes.

The main religious building is the Basilica di Santa Maria in Valvendra, an important example of local sacred architecture. Other churches and civic buildings, together with the town’s lakefront promenade, contribute to its historic character. The economy is centered on tourism, services, and small-scale manufacturing, with boating and lake activities being popular with visitors.

Lovere serves as a gateway to the broader Sebino region on Lake Iseo, including Monte Isola and other lakeside towns. It hosts cultural events and markets in the summer and is connected to regional road networks that link Lombardy’s cities and towns.
