Lorestan

Lorestan is a province in western Iran. Its capital is Khorramabad. The province sits in the Zagros mountain range, with a rugged landscape of high peaks, deep valleys, and fertile plains.

Rivers such as Dez and Kashkan course through Lorestan, supporting agriculture in the river valleys. The climate is varied, with cold winters and hot summers, and large differences between altitudes.

Lorestan has ancient roots. It is home to the Lurs, an Iranian people who speak Luri. The region is famed for the Lorestan bronzes, a set of Bronze Age artifacts discovered in the area, highlighting early metallurgical skill. The fortress of Falak-ol-Aflak in Khorramabad is a notable historical site.

Economy and culture: Agriculture, pastoralism, and handicrafts dominate the economy. Crops include cereals, fruits, and nuts; sheep and goats are common. The Luri-speaking communities preserve distinctive music, dance, and textile crafts.

Administration: Lorestan is one of Iran's 31 provinces. It is subdivided into counties and districts. The name Lorestan means land of the Lurs.
