Loppersum

Loppersum is a village located in the province of Groningen in the northeastern Netherlands. It is situated in the municipality of Eemsdelta, which was formed in 2021 through the merger of several former municipalities, including Appingedam, Delfzijl, and Loppersum. Prior to this merger, Loppersum was the administrative center of its own municipality of the same name.

The village is characterized by its rural setting, typical of the Groninger landscape. Historically, Loppersum has been an agricultural community. The area is known for its characteristic terpen, artificial mounds built in ancient times to protect settlements from flooding.

One of the notable features of Loppersum is the St. Vitus Church, a prominent medieval church with a tall tower, which serves as a landmark for the village. The church's construction dates back to the 13th century.

In recent years, Loppersum and the surrounding region have been significantly impacted by gas extraction activities.
