Lokomotivet, a Swedish term meaning "the locomotive," refers to a self-propelled railway vehicle that provides the motive power for trains. Locomotives are designed to pull or push rolling stock along tracks and can be powered by various energy sources, including steam, diesel engines, electric traction from overhead lines or third rails, and emerging technologies such as battery-electric or hydrogen propulsion.

The concept originated in the early 19th century with steam locomotives in Britain, which demonstrated the ability to haul heavy loads over long distances and helped drive industrialization. In the mid-20th century, diesel-electric and electric locomotives supplanted steam in most networks due to higher efficiency, lower operating costs, and the ability to operate with extensive electrification. Today, many rail systems rely on electric locomotives for passenger and freight services, while diesel-electric units remain common on non-electrified routes, and battery or hydrogen options are being explored for regional or shorter-distance services.
