Lohkeamiskäyttäytyminen, also known as cleavage behavior, refers to the tendency of crystalline materials to break along specific planes of weakness within their crystal lattice. These planes, known as cleavage planes, are characterized by weaker atomic bonds compared to other directions in the crystal. When a sufficient stress is applied, the material will fracture along these planes, resulting in smooth, flat surfaces that often mirror the internal structure of the crystal.

The nature of cleavage depends on the type of bonding and the arrangement of atoms in the crystal. For example, in ionic crystals like mica, weaker electrostatic forces between alternating positive and negative ions along certain planes facilitate easy separation. Similarly, in layered structures, such as graphite, weak van der Waals forces between layers lead to excellent basal cleavage. Conversely, materials with strong, uniform bonding throughout their lattice, like diamond, exhibit very little or no cleavage.

Cleavage is a significant property in mineralogy and materials science. It is often used as a diagnostic characteristic for identifying minerals, as the shape and quality of the cleavage surfaces can be distinctive. In materials engineering, understanding cleavage behavior is crucial for predicting a material's fracture toughness and designing components that can withstand stress without catastrophic failure. Controlled cleavage can also be exploited in manufacturing processes, such as the preparation of thin films or specific crystal shapes. The term can also be applied metaphorically to describe phenomena that split or divide along natural lines of separation, though its primary meaning relates to solid materials.
