Logbüchern, also known as ship's logs or nautical logs, are official records kept on vessels at sea. They document the ship's course, speed, weather conditions, and significant events that occur during a voyage. The captain or an appointed officer is responsible for maintaining the logbook, ensuring its accuracy and completeness. Historically, logbooks were crucial for navigation, allowing mariners to track their position and estimate arrival times. They also served as legal documents in cases of accidents, disputes, or salvage operations.

The contents of a logbook typically include the date and time, position of the vessel (often recorded using celestial navigation or, in modern times, GPS), wind speed and direction, sea state, and any notable observations such as sightings of other vessels, land, or marine life. Entries also detail any changes in course or speed, engine performance, and the occurrence of drills or inspections. Important communications, cargo details, and crew changes might also be recorded.

Modern logbooks often incorporate digital systems alongside traditional paper records, although the fundamental purpose of documenting the ship's journey and any significant events remains the same. These records are vital for operational management, safety, and as a historical archive of maritime activities. They provide invaluable data for understanding past voyages, improving future operations, and for legal and insurance purposes.
