Ljusproduktion refers to the creation of light. This can occur through various physical processes. One common method is incandescence, where a material is heated to a high temperature, causing it to emit light. The classic incandescent light bulb is a prime example of this, with a filament heated by electricity until it glows. Another significant mechanism is luminescence, a broader category that involves the emission of light without significant heat. Photoluminescence occurs when a substance absorbs photons (light particles) and then re-emits them, often at a different wavelength. Fluorescence and phosphorescence are types of photoluminescence, differing in the duration of light emission after the excitation source is removed. Electroluminescence is the emission of light in response to an electric current or field. This is the principle behind LEDs (light-emitting diodes) and OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes), which have become increasingly prevalent due to their energy efficiency and durability. Chemiluminescence is light produced by a chemical reaction, such as in glow sticks. Bioluminescence is a form of chemiluminescence that occurs in living organisms, like fireflies or certain marine species. The study and application of light production are fundamental to fields ranging from physics and engineering to biology and art.
