Ljusförorenade is a Swedish term that translates to "light pollution" in English. It refers to the excessive, misdirected, or obtrusive artificial light, typically from urban or industrial sources, that illuminates the night sky. This phenomenon can have a range of negative impacts on the environment, human health, and astronomical observation.

The primary cause of light pollution is the widespread use of artificial lighting for purposes such as streetlights, building illumination, signage, and security. Inefficiently designed fixtures that emit light upwards or outwards, rather than directing it where it is needed, contribute significantly to the problem. Light trespass, where light spills onto neighboring properties, and glare, which is excessive brightness that causes visual discomfort, are also components of light pollution.
