Ljudformatet, or audio format, refers to the way sound is stored and represented in a digital medium. Different audio formats exist to serve various purposes, ranging from high-fidelity archival storage to efficient streaming and playback on portable devices.

Common audio formats can be broadly categorized into uncompressed, lossless compressed, and lossy compressed. Uncompressed formats like WAV (Waveform Audio File Format) and AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) store audio data without any data reduction, resulting in the highest possible quality but also the largest file sizes. These are often used in professional audio production and mastering.

Lossless compressed formats, such as FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) and ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec), reduce file size by removing redundant information without discarding any audio data. This means the original sound quality can be perfectly restored upon playback, making them a good compromise between quality and file size for audiophiles.

Lossy compressed formats, including MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer III) and AAC (Advanced Audio Coding), achieve significant file size reduction by permanently removing certain audio information that is deemed less perceptible to the human ear. While this results in smaller files ideal for streaming and general listening, there is a trade-off in audio fidelity. The degree of compression can be adjusted, affecting both file size and sound quality. The choice of audio format depends on the intended application and desired balance between quality, file size, and compatibility.
