Liudolfs

Liudolfs is a masculine given name used in Latvian-speaking communities. It is the Latvian form of the Germanic name Ludwig (also Ludolf), adapted into Latvian phonology and orthography.

The name is derived from the Proto-Germanic elements hlud- “fame” and -wig “battle,” meaning roughly “famous in battle.” The modern form Liudolfs reflects Latvian practice of adding a final -s for masculine names. Cognates include Ludolf/Ludolph, Ludwig, and Ludovic/Ludovico.

The name has been used in Latvia since at least the 19th century, often among families with Germanic heritage, as well as in ecclesiastical and academic circles. In contemporary Latvia it remains relatively uncommon but is still encountered, including among the Latvian diaspora.
