Lisäainemetallit, also known as additive metals, are metallic materials intentionally introduced into a base metal or alloy to enhance specific properties. These additions are crucial in metallurgy for tailoring the performance of materials for diverse applications.

The primary purpose of adding these metals is to achieve desired characteristics that the base metal alone cannot provide. For example, adding small amounts of chromium to iron creates stainless steel, which exhibits significantly improved corrosion resistance. Nickel is often added to steel to increase its strength and toughness, particularly at low temperatures. Manganese is used to improve the hardenability and wear resistance of steel.

Other common additive metals include molybdenum, which enhances strength, hardness, and resistance to creep at high temperatures, and vanadium, which refines grain structure and increases strength and toughness. Silicon is frequently added to cast iron to improve its fluidity and reduce shrinkage. Aluminum can be used as a deoxidizer in steelmaking or to improve the high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance of alloys.

The precise amount and combination of additive metals are critical. Too little may not achieve the desired effect, while too much can lead to detrimental properties, such as brittleness or increased cost without significant benefit. The selection of additive metals depends heavily on the intended application, such as in construction, automotive manufacturing, aerospace, or toolmaking, where specific mechanical, chemical, or thermal properties are paramount. Understanding the role of each additive metal is fundamental to the science of materials engineering.
