Lisäystekniikoilla, often translated as additive manufacturing or 3D printing, refers to a group of technologies that build objects by adding material layer by layer. Unlike subtractive manufacturing, which removes material from a larger block, additive techniques start with a digital design and construct the object directly from raw materials. This process allows for the creation of complex geometries and customized parts that might be difficult or impossible to produce with traditional methods.

The fundamental principle involves slicing a 3D digital model into thin horizontal layers. A machine then deposits, fuses, or cures material according to the shape of each layer, sequentially building the object from the bottom up. Common materials used in additive manufacturing include plastics, metals, ceramics, and composites.

Various types of additive manufacturing processes exist, each with its own advantages and applications. Fused deposition modeling (FDM) extrudes thermoplastic filament layer by layer. Stereolithography (SLA) uses a UV laser to cure liquid photopolymer resin. Selective laser sintering (SLS) fuses powdered material with a laser. These technologies find applications across numerous industries, including aerospace, automotive, medical, and consumer goods, for prototyping, tooling, and end-use part production. The flexibility and efficiency of additive manufacturing continue to drive innovation in product design and manufacturing.
