Lisäkausia, or "extra seasons," refers to the practice of extending the growing season for crops by using protective structures or techniques that allow gardening and farming to continue beyond the typical frost-free period. This method is particularly useful in regions with short growing seasons or unpredictable weather patterns, enabling farmers and gardeners to cultivate a wider variety of plants and increase overall yields.

The most common form of lisäkausia involves the use of cold frames, cloche covers, or greenhouse structures. These enclosures create a microclimate that retains heat and protects plants from cold temperatures, frost, or harsh winds. Cold frames are simple, low-cost structures made of glass or plastic, often placed directly on the ground, while cloches are individual covers for small plants. Greenhouses, though more expensive and labor-intensive to maintain, provide a fully controlled environment for year-round cultivation.

Another approach to extending the growing season is through the use of row covers or floating blankets, which are lightweight fabrics draped over plants to insulate them from cold air. These materials allow sunlight and water to reach the plants while trapping heat. Mulching, the practice of covering soil with organic materials like straw or leaves, also helps retain soil warmth and moisture, indirectly supporting plant growth during cooler periods.

Lisäkausia is not limited to protecting plants from cold but can also involve shading structures to prevent overheating during summer months. This dual-purpose method ensures that sensitive plants remain within an optimal temperature range for extended periods. While lisäkausia requires additional effort and resources, it can significantly enhance agricultural productivity and allow for the cultivation of crops that would otherwise be impossible in a given climate.
