Linnakujuditele

Linnakujuditele, also known as the "castle of the devil" or "devil's castle," is a historic fortress located in the town of Linnaküla, Estonia. The castle's origins date back to the 13th century, when it was built by the Teutonic Knights as a defensive stronghold against the local Livonian tribes. The name "Linnakujuditele" is believed to have been derived from the Livonian word "linnak" meaning "castle" and "judite" meaning "devil," reflecting the Teutonic Knights' association with the devil in Livonian folklore.

The castle's architecture is a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles, with a central keep, a courtyard, and surrounding walls. The keep, which is the oldest part of the castle, features a spiral staircase and a large hall. The castle's walls are reinforced with towers and bastions, providing strong defensive capabilities. The castle was extensively rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries, with the addition of new buildings and fortifications.

Linnakujuditele served as a residence for the local nobility and was used as a prison during the 17th century. In the 18th century, the castle fell into disrepair and was eventually abandoned. Today, the castle is a popular tourist attraction and a museum, offering visitors a glimpse into Estonia's medieval history. The castle's grounds also feature a park and a small lake, providing a peaceful setting for visitors to enjoy.
