Linjenes

Linjenes is a Nordic interdisciplinary cultural organization and platform devoted to exploring lines as a formal, social, and perceptual element in art, design, and urban space. The organization brings together artists, researchers, architects, and educators to study how lines structure experience, communicate information, and influence public perception.

Founded in 2012 by a collective of professionals in Oslo, Linjenes began as a series of small-scale exhibitions and public interventions that examined line as method and metaphor. Over time, it expanded to a national and cross-border program with partnerships across museums, universities, and municipal authorities.

Activities include curating exhibitions, organizing public installations, running education programs for schools and community groups, and publishing an online archive and a quarterly magazine. The work often combines fieldwork in cities with studio-based research, aiming to make the concept of lines tangible in everyday environments.

Notable projects include Line Walks, which traced pedestrian routes through urban squares with temporary interventions; Contour Maps, a series of cartographic works that translate social space into line drawings; and Variations on a Line, a digital-media exploration of rhythm and trace.

Governance is carried out by a board of volunteers and a small staff team. Linjenes relies on cultural grants, sponsorships, and project partnerships with universities and cultural institutions for funding.
