Linerförsäkringar, or "liner insurance" in English, refers to specialized insurance policies designed to cover liabilities and risks associated with the operation of large vessels, particularly container ships and other large cargo carriers, often referred to as "liners." These insurance policies are crucial for the shipping industry, providing financial protection against a wide range of potential losses.

The primary purpose of linerförsäkringar is to indemnify shipowners and operators against claims arising from various maritime incidents. This can include damage to the vessel itself, such as from collisions or grounding, as well as third-party liabilities. Third-party liabilities are a significant component and can encompass cargo damage, pollution incidents, personal injury or death of crew members or passengers, and damage to fixed or floating objects like docks or bridges.

These insurance policies are typically structured as a combination of Hull & Machinery (H&M) insurance, which covers the physical vessel and its equipment, and Protection & Indemnity (P&I) insurance, which covers the liabilities of the shipowner. P&I clubs, often mutual insurance associations, are a common way for shipowners to obtain this coverage, pooling risks among their members.

The complexity of international shipping and the potential for catastrophic events, such as major oil spills or large-scale cargo losses, necessitate comprehensive insurance solutions.
