Liittymälaiteet

Liittymälaiteet, often translated as terminal equipment or customer premises equipment (CPE), refer to devices that are located at the end-user's premises and connect them to a telecommunications network. These devices are the interface between the user's internal network or individual devices and the external public or private network. Examples of liittymälaiteet are widely varied and depend on the type of service being provided.

In the context of telecommunications, common liittymälaiteet include modems for internet access, routers that manage local networks and connect to the modem, and set-top boxes for television services. For mobile communications, a mobile phone itself can be considered a liittymälaite. In enterprise settings, these devices might encompass more complex networking hardware like dedicated servers, firewalls, or specialized communication gateways.

The primary function of liittymälaiteet is to translate signals between the format used by the user's devices and the format used by the service provider's network. They often handle tasks such as data conversion, network address translation, and security functions. The ownership and management of liittymälaiteet can vary; sometimes they are owned by the service provider and leased to the customer, while in other cases, customers are free to purchase and manage their own compatible devices.
