Liimapistoinas

Liimapistoinas, scientifically known as Limax maximus, is a species of keeled slug belonging to the Limacidae family. It is one of the largest and most common terrestrial slugs found in Europe and has been introduced to many other parts of the world, including North America, Australia, and New Zealand. The name "liimapistoinas" is Finnish and refers to its sticky secretions.

Adult specimens of Limax maximus can grow to be quite large, often reaching lengths of 10 to 20 centimeters (4 to 8 inches), with some individuals exceeding this size. Their coloration is highly variable, typically ranging from a pale cream or yellowish-brown to dark grey or black. They are characterized by distinctive dark spots or longitudinal stripes, which can be irregular in pattern. A prominent feature is the keel, a ridge running along the back of the posterior end, giving it a somewhat pointed appearance. The mantle, a fleshy shield covering the anterior part of the body, is usually marked with concentric rings.

Liimapistoinas are primarily nocturnal and are most active during damp or humid conditions, especially after rainfall. They inhabit a variety of environments, including gardens, woodlands, grasslands, and urban areas. Their diet consists mainly of decaying organic matter, fungi, and plant material, though they can also consume animal matter and are sometimes considered a garden pest due to their feeding habits on young plants and vegetables. They reproduce by laying clusters of translucent eggs, often in moist, sheltered locations.
