Liidesena

Liidesena is a rural municipality located in the northwestern part of the country, within the administrative boundaries of the Vaara District. The area covers approximately 65 square kilometres and features a mix of low hills, river valleys, and extensive forest cover. The municipal headquarters lie at the village of Karel, which sits on the banks of the Liidesen River, a tributary that flows into the larger Valja River system.

The first recorded settlement in the area dates back to the late 17th century, when small groups of farmers moved inland to cultivate the fertile floodplain. Archaeological findings suggest that the region was occasionally used as a transit route between the coastal trade centres and the interior. Over the centuries the population grew slowly, with recorded censuses showing a peak of just over 3,200 inhabitants in the early 20th century. Today the municipality has an estimated population of 1,800, with a slightly aging demographic profile.

The local economy remains predominantly agricultural, focusing on dairy, rye, and potato production. In the post-war period, modest forestry operations expanded, taking advantage of the surrounding mixed‑wood forest. Small-scale manufacturing, such as carpentry and bicycle repair shops, has also emerged, catering primarily to regional markets. Tourism, though not large in scale, is gaining traction; visitors are drawn to the natural scenery and traditional farm stays.

Culturally, Liidesena hosts an annual summer festival in early July, featuring folk music, dance and a market showcasing regional produce. The municipal library, established in 1924, contains a notable collection of local historical documents. In terms of public services, the municipality operates one primary school, a health clinic, and a community centre that doubles as a venue for local meetings and events.
