Lihasjäykkyydet, known in English as muscle stiffness or rigor, refers to a sensation of tightness and reduced flexibility in muscles. It can occur after strenuous physical activity, particularly in individuals not accustomed to it, a phenomenon often called delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). This type of stiffness typically appears 12-72 hours after exercise and resolves within a few days.

Beyond exercise, lihasjäykkyydet can be a symptom of various medical conditions. Rheumatic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, can cause stiffness, especially in the morning, which often improves with movement.
