Lightscapes refer to the perceived visual character of an environment created by light. The term encompasses both daylight and artificial light, as well as the dynamic interactions of intensity, color temperature, direction, and shadow that shape mood and readability of spaces.

The components include luminaires and lighting schemes, daylight availability, materials and surfaces with varying reflectance, and atmospheric conditions. Color temperature (warm to cool), luminance, illuminance, glare, and contrast influence how a space feels and functions. Designers consider both quantity and quality of light, including distribution, diffusion, and shadow.

In practice, lightscapes are studied and produced across disciplines such as architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, photography, cinema, and installation art. Methods include daylighting analysis, lighting design, and computational simulations; tools include photometers, spectroradiometers, and dynamic modeling. Sustainability considerations emphasize energy efficiency and minimizing light trespass and skyglow.

Applications range from street and public-space illumination to museums, theatres, and outdoor art installations. Night-time urban lighting can reveal or alter the character of neighborhoods, while event-based lightscapes create temporary environments through projection, color, and movement.

The field engages aesthetics, safety, and social issues; guidelines and standards address glare, disability access, and ecological impact. As a concept, lightscapes highlight how lighting design shapes perception, experience, and place.
