Lightglades

Lightglades is a vast wetland biotope located in the central lowlands of Verdoria. It comprises extensive reed swamps, peat bogs, and slow-moving channels. The landscape is notable for bioluminescent organisms that emit a soft glow at night, giving the terrain a perpetual twilight that persists even on overcast days. The area experiences seasonal flooding and a temperate, maritime climate.

Flora and fauna: The most conspicuous plants are glowgrasses, luminescent moss, and umbrella ferns. The glow supports a nocturnal food web, including fireflies-like insects, luminous fungi, tree frogs, and marsh voles. Predators include water owls and marsh cats. The luminescence also aids navigation for local inhabitants and migratory birds.

Hydrology and soil: The system is fed by a network of springs and rainfall, with peat soils that store carbon. Water levels rise during the spring melt and recede in late summer, creating a patchwork of open pools and dense marsh.

Human use and conservation: Indigenous communities historically relied on the abundance of fish and reeds. In recent decades, the Lightglades Conservancy oversees protected zones, sustainable harvesting, and restoration projects to address drainage and invasive species. Access is regulated to minimize disturbance during breeding seasons.

Cultural and notable features: Lantern Pools and the Lantern Ridge are named for clusters of glowgrasses and fungi that light up the landscape. Annual light festivals celebrate nocturnal life and the ecological value of the glades.
