Lightfocused

Lightfocused is an international visual arts collective that was founded in Berlin in 2005. The group was established by a group of artists, technologists and designers who were interested in exploring the intersection of light, space and digital media. The collective’s name is a play on the idea of focusing light as a metaphor for concentrating creative energy in public spaces.

Lightfocused develops interactive installations that use LED displays, projection mapping and sensor‑controlled lighting systems. Its work has been exhibited in a variety of venues, including art museums, contemporary cultural centers, and public urban projects. Notable exhibitions include the Lightfocused Pavilion at the 2010 Ars Electronica festival, the Interactive Light Experience at the 2014 Seoul Museum of Art, and a permanent installation titled “Urban Glow” in the streets of Barcelona’s Old Town. The collective has also collaborated with city governments on temporary light shows for festivals and civic celebrations.

The collective is organised as a loosely structured network of individual artists and teams who work on projects together. Membership is usually open to those with a background in fine arts, design, programming or engineering. Project parameters are decided democratically, and the collective publishes all technical documentation and processes online under an open‑source licence.

Lightfocused has been cited in academic studies that examine the role of public lighting in social engagement and the use of digital media for environmental art. The collective’s emphasis on collaboration and technical transparency has influenced a number of emerging light art projects across Europe and North America.
