Lifewaysurbanization is a concept in anthropology and urban studies that refers to the transformation of traditional, place-based ways of living as communities and individuals increasingly adopt or adapt to urban environments. It encompasses changes in economic activity, social organization, housing, and daily routines as lifeways are intersected by city life, markets, and global influences while preserving elements of heritage.

Drivers include rural-to-urban migration, diversification of livelihoods, access to education and services, and exposure to mass media and consumer networks. Mechanisms include formal employment in urban economies, informal sector activities, changes in housing and transportation, and the diffusion of new cuisines, languages, dress, and rituals. Lifeways may be retained in urban enclaves while also shifting to more urban norms.

Impacts are varied: some communities sustain strong cultural identities through urban rituals, crafts, and community organizations; others experience erosion of customary practices due to time constraints, discrimination, or market pressures. Hybridity frequently emerges, with syncretic practices, new social arrangements, and transnational links. Health, diet, and family structure can shift, and urban planning or policy can either support or threaten ongoing lifeways.

Scholars study lifewaysurbanization through ethnography, historical analysis, and urban sociocultural research, highlighting how people negotiate tradition and modernity in cities. The concept helps explain cultural persistence and change in contemporary urban societies and informs debates about heritage, inclusion, and the rights of migratory and minority populations.
