Liers

Liers is a term with multiple potential meanings, depending on context. It does not have a single, fixed definition in English.

In geography, Lier refers to a municipality in the province of Antwerp, in the Flemish Region of Belgium. In English-language writing, “Liers” may occasionally be used informally to refer to the people of Lier or to things associated with that town, but this usage is not standard. More common practice is to describe residents as “people from Lier” or “Lier residents,” using the place name as a proper noun rather than a demonym.

In linguistics and vocabulary, lier can be an archaic or less common spelling. It can denote one who lies, in two different senses: a person who tells lies (a liar) or—more rarely—one who lies down. The plural form “liers” can be found in texts employing those older spellings, but in contemporary usage the deception sense is typically written with “liars” and the reclining sense with separate phrases (for example, “one who lies down”). Modern standard English generally avoids the spelling “lier” for the deception sense.

As a surname, Liers appears in some European records and may be borne by individuals in various countries. It is not tied to a single famous figure, and occurrences are generally regional rather than worldwide.
