Lichtspiel
Lichtspiel is a German term literally meaning "light play." In the early twentieth century it was used to describe moving pictures, thus serving as an early synonym for cinema. The word combined the German noun Licht (light) with Spiel (play or game) and reflected the technology of projection, when image and sound were produced by harnessing artificial light. By the 1900s, newspapers and journals regularly used Lichtspiel to refer to movies shown in the emerging amusement venues called Lichtspiele.
