Lichtschutzwirkung refers to the effectiveness of a substance or material in protecting against light, particularly ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This concept is crucial in various fields, including skincare, materials science, and textiles. In the context of sunscreen and skincare products, Lichtschutzwirkung is quantified by the Sun Protection Factor (SPF), which indicates the degree of protection against UVB rays. A higher SPF number signifies greater protection. Beyond UVB, protection against UVA rays is also important and is often indicated by other rating systems.

In materials science, Lichtschutzwirkung is vital for preventing degradation caused by light exposure. Polymers, paints, and plastics can become brittle, discolor, or lose their structural integrity when exposed to UV radiation over time.
