Lichchavi

The Lichchavi were an ancient Indian republic, prominent around the 6th century BCE. Their territory was located in the region of modern-day Bihar, India, and parts of Nepal. They are often cited as a significant example of an early Indian republic or ganasangha. The Lichchavi were known for their democratic traditions and played a crucial role in the political landscape of the time.

Their capital city, Vaishali, was a renowned center of trade and culture. Vaishali was also a significant location for both Buddhism and Jainism, with Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, said to have been born a Lichchavi prince. Lord Buddha also visited and preached in Vaishali on several occasions. The Lichchavi maintained alliances and rivalries with other powerful kingdoms of the era, including the Magadha Empire. Their distinct political structure and cultural influence left a lasting mark on the history of ancient India. The decline of the Lichchavi republic is attributed to the rising power of neighboring empires, particularly the Guptas, who eventually absorbed their territories.
