Lexikoni

Lexikoni is the Albanian term for a lexicon or dictionary. In a broad sense, it refers to a collection of lexical items—words and sometimes phrases—together with information about their meanings, pronunciations, etymologies, and usage. The concept is closely related to, but distinct from, fjalori, the more common Albanian word for “dictionary.” While a fjalor is often a general reference work, a lexikoni is sometimes used to emphasize the structure of the vocabulary itself or a specialized, word-focused compilation.

In linguistics and lexicography, a lexikoni can be monolingual, displaying the entries of one language, or bilingual/multilingual, presenting correspondences between languages. Lexikoni may be organized by headwords, with entries that include parts of speech, definitions, etymology, pronunciation guides, usage notes, and example sentences. They can also be scholarly, historical, encyclopedic, or technical, concentrating on terminology within a particular field such as science, law, or technology.

Modern uses of the term extend beyond printed books. With the growth of digital resources, lexikoni can refer to online or software-based vocabularies, corpora, or lexical databases used in language education, translation, or natural language processing. In this sense, a lexikoni functions as a structured repository of a language’s or domain’s vocabulary, supporting learning, research, and computational analysis.
