Levykäämityksissä, known in English as plate windings or disc windings, refers to a method of constructing electrical coils. This technique is particularly relevant in applications where high currents and robust mechanical construction are required, such as in transformers and inductors. Instead of using a single long wire wound around a core, plate windings utilize flat, conductive strips or plates. These plates are typically insulated from each other and arranged in a specific pattern.

The design involves stacking these conductive plates, often in a spiral or layered fashion, to create the desired coil geometry. The insulation between the plates is crucial to prevent short circuits. This method offers several advantages. Firstly, it can handle significantly higher currents than traditional wire windings due to the larger cross-sectional area of the conductive plates. This reduces resistive losses and improves efficiency, especially in high-power applications. Secondly, plate windings provide excellent mechanical stability and rigidity, which is beneficial in environments subject to vibration or physical stress. They also allow for more effective cooling, as the large surface area of the plates facilitates heat dissipation. The manufacturing process for plate windings can be more complex than for wire windings, often involving precise cutting, stacking, and insulation techniques. Despite this, their performance characteristics make them a preferred choice for demanding electrical engineering tasks.
