Levertester

Levertester is a term used in Dutch-language medical contexts to describe tests or devices that assess liver function or liver health. In clinical use, it can refer to standard laboratory blood tests as well as portable or point-of-care tools intended to evaluate liver-related parameters.

Most liver function testing centers on a group of biochemical markers in blood. Common components include enzymes such as alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT); substances like total and direct bilirubin; and proteins such as albumin, along with coagulation measures such as prothrombin time. Together, these tests help detect liver inflammation, cholestasis, biliary obstruction, and impaired synthetic function, and they are frequently ordered to investigate jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain, or suspected liver disease.

Types of levertesters range from conventional laboratory panels to handheld or near-patient devices. Laboratory tests are performed in certified facilities using standardized assays, while portable devices may provide rapid, initial assessments at clinics or in the field. Point-of-care testing can support timely clinical decisions but may require confirmatory laboratory testing for precise diagnosis and staging.

Interpretation of levertester results depends on reference ranges that vary by age, sex, laboratory method, and clinical context. Elevations or reductions must be interpreted alongside symptoms, imaging, and patient history, as many conditions—from viral hepatitis to alcoholic liver disease or drug-induced injury—can influence results. A single abnormal value is rarely definitive; liver disease often requires comprehensive evaluation.
