Leuningen

Leuning, in Dutch architectural terminology, refers to the handrail or guard along stairs, balconies, and ramps. It is designed to be grasped for support and to prevent falls, forming a part of the safety barrier at the edge of elevated surfaces. A leuning can be a simple wooden rail or a metal, glass, or composite element, often combined with balusters or panels to form a guard.

In use, leuningen are installed on interior and exterior stairways, terraces, and mezzanines. They may be continuous along the flight or interrupted by newel posts, and they are typically finished to suit the surrounding design. Materials range from natural wood to stainless steel, aluminum, concrete, PVC, or tempered glass, with finishes that suit climate, wear, and aesthetics.

End conditions are important for comfort and safety, with handrails terminating neatly at walls or continuing beyond door openings to aid movement. In contemporary designs, leuningen may combine with glass panels, metal posts, or solid panels for a modern appearance while maintaining safety.
