Leukorreduktiota

Leukorreduktiota, also known as leukocyte reduction or removal, is a process used in blood transfusion therapy. It involves the removal of white blood cells (leukocytes) from donated blood products, such as red blood cells and platelets. This procedure is primarily performed to prevent certain complications associated with transfusions.

The main reason for leukorreduktiota is to reduce the risk of febrile non-hemolytic transfusion reactions (FNHTRs). These reactions are characterized by fever and chills, and are often caused by the recipient's immune system reacting to the white blood cells present in the transfused product. By removing leukocytes, the likelihood of these reactions is significantly decreased.

Another important benefit of leukorreduktiota is the reduction in the transmission of certain viruses and opportunistic infections. White blood cells can harbor pathogens, and their removal helps to decrease the viral load in the blood product, thus lowering the risk of transfusion-transmitted infections. This is particularly relevant for immunocompromised patients who are more susceptible to such infections.

Leukorreduktiota is typically achieved through filtration, where donated blood is passed through a specialized filter designed to trap white blood cells. This process can be done at the collection center before the blood is distributed or at the bedside by the healthcare provider administering the transfusion. The effectiveness of leukorreduktiota is generally high, with a significant percentage of leukocytes being removed.

While leukorreduktiota offers numerous benefits, it is not always necessary for every transfusion. The decision to use leukocyte-reduced blood products is usually made based on the patient's individual risk factors, such as a history of transfusion reactions or a compromised immune system.
