Lentoyhtiön

Lentoyhtiö is the Finnish term for an airline. Lentoyhtiön is the genitive form meaning "the airline’s." The concept describes a company that provides air transport services for passengers and cargo using aircraft under a commercial license, operating either on a scheduled basis or as charter services.

Most lentoyhtiöt operate networks composed of routes between airports, leveraging hubs or point-to-point services. They maintain fleets sized to demand, employ pilots, cabin crew, and maintenance staff, and generate revenue from ticket sales, cargo, and ancillary services such as baggage fees and on-board sales.

Lentoyhtiöt can be categorized by business model: full-service carriers offer a wide network, higher service levels, and bundled pricing; low-cost carriers emphasize lower fares and higher seat density with unbundled services. Networks may be hub-and-spoke, building traffic through major airports, or point-to-point, flying direct connections between destinations.

Regulation and safety are central. EU airlines operate under European Aviation Safety Agency rules and national authorities; in Finland, Traficom is the competent authority, issuing and monitoring Air Operator Certificates, overseeing maintenance, flight operations, and crew licensing. International standards are set by ICAO and audited by IATA's Operational Safety Audit (IOSA).

Environment and consumer issues are increasingly emphasized. Airlines face scrutiny over emissions, noise, and sustainability; many pursue more efficient aircraft, fleet renewal, and sustainable aviation fuels. Passengers have rights regarding refunds, delays, and compensation, governed by applicable laws and airline policies.
