Leikkuulämpötilat, or cutting temperatures, refer to the temperatures encountered at the interface between a cutting tool and a workpiece during machining operations. These temperatures are a critical factor influencing tool wear, surface finish, cutting forces, and overall process efficiency. The heat generated during cutting arises from plastic deformation of the material in the shear zone and friction between the chip and the tool face, as well as between the flank face of the tool and the newly machined surface.

The magnitude of leikkuulämpötilat is influenced by several factors, including the cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut, material properties of both the workpiece and the tool, and the use of cutting fluids. Higher cutting speeds and feed rates generally lead to increased temperatures due to greater energy dissipation. Similarly, harder workpiece materials and tools with poor thermal conductivity tend to result in higher cutting temperatures.

Elevated leikkuulämpötilat can accelerate tool wear mechanisms such as diffusion wear, adhesion, and fatigue. This can reduce the tool's lifespan and necessitate more frequent tool changes, increasing production costs. Conversely, controlling leikkuulämpötilat through appropriate cutting parameters and effective cooling strategies is essential for achieving optimal machining performance and desired surface quality. Cutting fluids play a dual role by cooling the cutting zone and lubricating the interface, thereby reducing both friction and temperature.
