Lehetségektl

Lehetségektl is a term found in Hungarian-language discussions to denote the set of possible options available to an agent in a given situation. In decision theory this idea is commonly described as the choice set or feasible set, and lehetségektl is used as a nonstandard Hungarian label for that concept. The term is not part of standard dictionaries and appears mainly in informal, educational, or theoretical contexts.

Etymology: It derives from lehetőség meaning possibility or opportunity, plus the plural suffix -ek and the postposition -től meaning “from.” The canonical spelling is lehetőségektől (“from the possibilities”). The form lehetségektl is an unaccented transcription of the same word and is not the normative spelling in Hungarian orthography.

Usage: The concept helps discuss how constraints, information, or preferences shape the set of feasible alternatives a decision-maker considers. It contrasts with single-option scenarios or with the actual choice made, emphasizing the range of options before selection.

Examples: In a textbook, one might say: “A döntési modell a lehetségektől függően alakul” (“The decision model evolves depending on the set of possibilities”). Another sentence could read: “Az elemzés a lehetségektől független döntési mechanizmusokat vizsgálja” (the analysis studies decision mechanisms independent from the possibilities).
