Leelisemetallhüdroksiididega, commonly translated as alkali metal hydroxides, are a group of chemical compounds formed by the reaction of an alkali metal with water. The alkali metals are lithium (Li), sodium (Na), potassium (K), rubidium (Rb), cesium (Cs), and francium (Fr). These compounds are characterized by the presence of a hydroxide anion (OH-) bonded to an alkali metal cation.

The most common alkali metal hydroxides are sodium hydroxide (NaOH), also known as lye or caustic soda, and potassium hydroxide (KOH), known as caustic potash. These are strong bases, meaning they readily dissociate in water to produce hydroxide ions. This property makes them highly corrosive and useful in a wide range of industrial applications. Alkali metal hydroxides are typically white, crystalline solids that are highly soluble in water. Their dissolution in water is an exothermic process, releasing heat. Due to their corrosive nature, proper handling and safety precautions are essential when working with these substances. They react with acids in neutralization reactions, forming salts and water. In organic chemistry, they are often used as catalysts or reagents in various reactions, such as ester hydrolysis and aldol condensations.
