Ledgerjärjestelmissä, often translated as ledger systems or accounting systems, refers to the organized framework and methodologies used for recording, tracking, and summarizing financial transactions within an organization or a decentralized network. These systems are fundamental to financial management, providing a historical record of all monetary exchanges.

In traditional business contexts, a ledger system typically involves a collection of journals and ledgers where transactions are first recorded chronologically in journals and then posted to specific accounts in ledgers. This process allows for the creation of financial statements like the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement. The primary goal is to maintain accuracy, ensure accountability, and facilitate auditing.

More recently, the term "ledger systems" has gained prominence with the rise of distributed ledger technology (DLT), most notably blockchain. In these decentralized systems, transactions are recorded in a shared, immutable ledger that is distributed across multiple participants. Each new transaction is cryptographically linked to the previous one, forming a chain. This approach enhances transparency, security, and efficiency by eliminating the need for a central authority to validate and maintain the ledger. DLT-based ledger systems are foundational to cryptocurrencies, supply chain management, and various other applications requiring secure and transparent record-keeping.
