Lebensabschnitts

Lebensabschnitt is a term used in sociology, psychology and everyday language to denote a distinct period in a person’s life, characterized by particular physical development, psychological tasks, social roles and life priorities. The standard form in German is Lebensabschnitt; the genitive singular is des Lebensabschnitts, while Lebensabschnitts appears mainly in compounds or phrases requiring the genitive. The concept serves as a heuristic for describing and analyzing changes over time.

Common Lebensabschnitte include childhood (Kindheit), adolescence (Jugend), early adulthood (frühes Erwachsenenalter), midlife (mittleres Erwachsenenalter), and old age (Seniorenalter). Age boundaries are not universal and vary across cultures, research traditions and policy frameworks. Each stage is associated with typical developmental challenges, such as schooling and identity formation in youth, establishing work and family in adulthood, and health and retirement considerations in older age.

In practice, the idea informs fields such as life-course sociology, demography, education and career planning. It supports the design of services and interventions tailored to specific stages, for example targeted education programs, health promotion, or retirement planning.
