Lcystathionine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid that plays a crucial role in the methionine cycle and the transsulfuration pathway. It is an intermediate in the synthesis of cysteine from methionine. The enzyme cystathionine beta-synthase catalyzes the condensation of homocysteine with serine to form cystathionine. Subsequently, cystathionine gamma-lyase cleaves cystathionine to produce cysteine, alpha-ketobutyrate, and ammonia.
