Lcystathionine

Lcystathionine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid that plays a crucial role in the methionine cycle and the transsulfuration pathway. It is an intermediate in the synthesis of cysteine from methionine. The enzyme cystathionine beta-synthase catalyzes the condensation of homocysteine with serine to form cystathionine. Subsequently, cystathionine gamma-lyase cleaves cystathionine to produce cysteine, alpha-ketobutyrate, and ammonia. This pathway is essential for the production of cysteine, which is a precursor to glutathione, a vital antioxidant, and also for the regeneration of methionine.

The levels of cystathionine in biological systems can be influenced by various factors, including diet and genetic variations in the enzymes involved in its metabolism. Elevated levels of cystathionine, particularly in the blood, can be an indicator of vitamin B6 deficiency or certain genetic disorders affecting cystathionine beta-synthase or cystathionine gamma-lyase. These conditions can lead to homocystinuria, a metabolic disorder characterized by high levels of homocysteine and cystathionine in the blood and urine.
