Lavastust

Lavastust is a term found in some volcanology and regional geology literature used to describe the particulate material associated with lava-dominated eruptive activity. It covers dust-like aerosols, tephra fragments, and other solid material generated when molten lava fragments, fountains, or crustal breaking sends fragments into the air or rapidly cools as it comes into contact with air and surfaces. The term is not universally formalized in all glossary standards, but it appears in descriptive accounts of lava effusion scenarios where explosive or near-explosive fragmentation occurs alongside lava flow.

Composition and formation

Lavastust typically includes glass shards, mineral crystals, pumice fragments, and other silicate melts produced by fragmentation of lava. Particle sizes can range from fine ash to lapilli, with coarser fragments occasionally transported by lava flows or by vigorous spatter. The material often forms when lava breaks apart at the flow front, during lava fountains, or when hot lava interacts with water or cooler surfaces, causing rapid quenching and fragmentation.

Hazards and impacts

The presence of lavastust poses health risks from inhalation of fine ash and aerosols, can reduce visibility, and affect machinery, agriculture, and infrastructure. In aviation, even relatively dilute ash-cloud environments created by lava fragmentation can threaten aircraft engines and sensors. Deposition can alter surface albedo, temperature, and ecosystem interactions in affected areas.

Monitoring and context

Monitoring lavastust involves standard volcanic surveillance tools: seismic networks, gas measurements, infrared and visual cameras, and satellite observations to track eruption dynamics and ash dispersion. The term’s usage varies by language and region; in Icelandic and related literature, it may be used to describe the dust and tephra associated with lava activity, distinct from tephra produced primarily by magma fragmentation at depth.
