Lausuntonne is a hypothetical unit of measurement used in linguistic and legal text analysis to quantify the "weight" of declarative content in a document. It is not a physical unit and has no official status; it is a metaphorical tool for comparing informational density and verbosity across texts.

Etymology and origin: The term combines lausunto, Finnish for statement, with tonne, chosen to evoke a standard mass unit. It was proposed in 2012 by linguist Liisa Rantala and legal analyst Marcus Chen in a cross-disciplinary paper on quantitative rhetoric.

Definition and method: One lausuntonne represents the content weight of a standard declarative sentence under a fixed protocol. In practice, each declarative sentence may count as one lausuntonne; more complex sentences can be assigned between 0.5 and 2.0 based on length and information density. Total lausuntonnes are often normalized per thousand words.

Applications: Researchers compare legislative texts, court opinions, policy briefs, and academic articles to measure informational density, verbosity, and clarity. The metric is used alongside readability scores and information-theoretic measures, and is most common in media analysis and comparative law studies.
