Lattialämmitys, often translated as floor heating or underfloor heating, is a system designed to warm a building's floor from below, distributing heat evenly throughout a room. This method of heating offers several advantages over traditional radiators, including improved thermal comfort and a more aesthetically pleasing environment due to the absence of visible heating units.

There are two primary types of lattialämmitys: wet systems and electric systems. Wet systems typically involve circulating warm water through pipes embedded in the floor screed. These pipes are usually connected to a central boiler or a heat pump. Electric systems, on the other hand, use heating cables or mats laid beneath the floor covering. These are often powered by the building's electrical supply.

The installation of lattialämmitys can be done in various ways depending on the construction phase. It can be integrated into new builds during the pouring of concrete floors or installed in renovation projects, often using low-profile systems that minimize an increase in floor height. Common floor coverings compatible with lattialämmitys include tiles, stone, and some types of laminate and wood, though specific considerations are needed for different materials to ensure efficient heat transfer and prevent damage.

Lattialämmitys provides a gentle, radiant heat that rises from the floor, creating a consistent and comfortable temperature. This can be more energy-efficient than forced-air systems because it heats objects and people directly rather than just the air, and because heat loss is minimized due to the lower temperature differential. The even distribution of warmth also eliminates cold spots often found with other heating methods.
