Larvoan

Larvoan is a constructed language (conlang) developed for the fictional world of Ardonia. It is the traditional tongue of the coastal Valmar region and is part of the broader Ardonian language family. The language was designed to be approachable for learners while offering a naturalistic phonology and grammar, and it has a small but active community of learners and creators.

Phonology and writing: Larvoan contains 16 consonants: p, b, t, d, k, g, f, s, z, m, n, l, r, h, w, y; five vowels: a, e, i, o, u; syllable structure is generally CV or CVC, with stress typically on the penultimate syllable. The language has no phonemic tone. Writing uses a Latin-based alphabet of 24 letters with diacritics to mark vowel length and stress in some texts.

Grammar and syntax: Grammar is largely analytic with a basic SVO word order. Nouns have demonstratives and number is indicated by separate words rather than inflection. Verbs mark aspect and mood through affixes and clitics; pronouns distinguish person and number. Adjectives typically precede nouns.

Dialects and usage: Two main regional varieties are Northern Larvoan and Southern Larvoan, differing in vowel shifts and lexicon but mutually intelligible. Since the late 20th century, Larvoan has been taught in online courses and appears in speculative fiction, worldbuilding projects, and fan wikis. Academic and amateur linguists study its structure as part of conlang communities.

Cultural note: Notable texts and media elaborate Larvoan through translations and original fiction, contributing to its ongoing development. A common greeting is "Ari vel," roughly "be well."
