Laplacemuutos

Laplacemuutos is a term used in Finnish mathematical literature to describe the change or perturbation of the Laplacian operator that results from variations in the underlying space, such as a change of domain, metric, or weighting. The concept is central to perturbation theory, spectral geometry, and numerical analysis, where researchers study how the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplace–Beltrami operator respond to small or structured changes.

In continuous settings, the Laplace–Beltrami operator Δ_g depends on the metric g on a manifold M. When the metric is perturbed to g + εh, the first-order variation of Δ_g and its spectrum can be described by variational formulas, often referred to as Hadamard-type variations or shape derivatives. These formulas connect the geometry of the perturbation to changes in eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. Similarly, for domain perturbations, the derivative of an eigenvalue with respect to boundary displacement is governed by boundary data, giving explicit relations between the deformation and spectral changes.

In numerical contexts, Laplacemuutos also describes how changes in discretization, such as mesh deformation or reweighting of the stiffness matrix, affect the spectrum of the discrete Laplacian. This has implications for the stability, conditioning, and convergence of algorithms in graphics, acoustics, and physical simulations.
