Lannis is a coastal city-state and region in the fictional world of Veridia. Located on the southern edge of the Veridian continent, it fronts the Sea of Sighs and is bordered to the north by the Mark Plain. The area includes a busy harbor, a rolling inland belt, and a central highland area that feeds several rivers, including the Lannis and Alder.

The capital and largest city is Lannis City. The region is governed as a constitutional republic with a bicameral General Council and an Executive Council. The capital hosts the central administrative complex and the supreme court. The population is estimated at about 1.2 to 1.3 million; the official language is Lannish, with minority communities speaking Marai and Delfin.

Etymology: the name Lannis derives from an ancient word meaning shelter or harbor, reflecting its historic role as a maritime refuge.

History: Human settlement dates to the late Bronze Age. By the medieval era it developed into a trading and shipbuilding polity. It formed the Lannis Confederation, a loose alliance of coastal towns, by the 15th century. In the modern era it expanded commercial influence and joined the Veridian Confederation, attaining recognized sovereignty in the mid-19th century.

Economy: The economy is diversified, with a large emphasis on maritime trade, shipbuilding, and textiles. Alderbay Port is the principal hub for international shipping. Agriculture and light industry are concentrated in the inland belt.

Culture: Lannis is known for craft guilds, maritime music, and a Tide Festival celebrating the harbor’s founding. Local cuisine emphasizes fish, grains, and seasonal vegetables.
